if you go anywhere this year, make it the quaint destination of BRUGES, in the flemish region of belgium. relax, i know that gas prices are driving travel expenses sky high and the economy sucks. but you can still see the idyllic city for the price of a DVD rental. IN BRUGES is the story of two irish hitmen, one seasoned veteran and one shellshocked rookie, who have been sent to the tiny town by their hotheaded boss to cool their heels from a job gone wrong in dublin. this film debut by writer and director martin mcdonagh is a darkly human comedy, that hits unexpected highs and unforeseen lows. brendan gleeson is ken, who looks at the medieval town through the eyes of a giddy tourist. meanwhile, collin farrell as the reluctant ray, sees no reason to be in what he considers a shithole. the longer this unlikely duo stay in bruges, the more surreal their visit becomes as they meet locals, tourists, a dwarf american actor, and a potential romance for ray in the form of mysterious chloe. when the call does finally come from crime lord harry, the once breathtakingly serene vacation becomes a struggle between life and death. portrayed by an over-the-top-in-a-good-way ralph fiennes, harry is both frightening and comical as he pursues the sympathetic bad guys amidst the gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets. without dreaming of saying where the haunting storyline travels, in bruges is a charmingly hypnotic movie to get lost in.
